Accreditations and certifications are especially important for any university to offer the best level of service to its students and community. The same is true for the Georgia State University Police Department. For more than a decade, GSU Police has earned accreditation and certifications from three different agencies: the State of Georgia Law Enforcement Certification, the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA) and the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). Georgia State University Police is the only police force in the state accredited by all three agencies. These accreditations strengthen GSU Police’s readiness, accountability and service by establishing standards that clearly define authority, performance and responsibilities.
“Accreditations from the State of Georgia, IACLEA and CALEA means that we have some of the best men and women in the business serving as police officers at Georgia State operating under standards that promote responsibility and requiring us to have well defined policies in place,” said Chief Anthony Coleman. “The continuous training, evaluations and improvements guided by the industry’s best practices facilitates our department’s pursuit of professional excellence.
“It important to note that these are not mandatory,” Coleman said, “but we chose to pursue these accreditations and certifications to demonstrate our commitment to professionalism and excellence in law enforcement and the GSU community.”
The accreditations are not easy to earn, but they confirm that GSU Police meets internationally recognized standards for law enforcement which are verified by a team of independent outside assessors. While the standards are high for GSU Police to achieve and maintain, the Georgia State University community benefits from their commitment to be the best.
