Over a year ago we began the initial phase of improving the campus security infrastructure with additional campus lighting, new building access policies, parking structure improvements, emergency call boxes, the introduction of the GSU Blue Line and other initiatives. These improvements also added additional security cameras to the Atlanta and Perimeter campuses. During the review of the campus security camera network, a plan was initiated to begin a systematic upgrade of all campus cameras to include new AI technology to assist the GSU Police Department in several areas, resulting in faster response times for police and security staff. The plan will add this new technology to all 1,100 campus cameras. Once fully operational, the new Genetec Video Analytics system will include:
- Motion Detection – Triggers alerts when movement is detected in a defined area.
- Object Detection and Classification – Identifies people, vehicles and specific types.
- Intrusion Detection – Notifies when someone enters a restricted zone.
- License Plate Recognition – Captures and identifies vehicle license plates.
- Loitering Detection – Alerts if someone stays in a sensitive area too long.
- Crowd Detection – Monitors crowd density for safety and event management.
- Object Left Behind/Removed Detection – Detects when objects are added or removed from a scene.
- People Counting/Heat Mapping – Counts individuals entering/exiting an area for occupancy management.
- Improved Forensic Search Capabilities – With searchable metadata. Operational insights such as traffic flow, pedestrian patterns and occupancy for non-security uses. These analytics are powered by AI and machine learning, enabling more accurate results over time.
These video improvements work in tandem with our new Panther Place at the University Commons, which opened in fall 2024. Panther Places are open and staffed 24/7 by security personnel, and the Panther Place at University Commons also has a state-of-the-art Camera Monitoring Center which allows for real-time observation of activity across the campus, around the clock.
Providing a safe and welcoming environment on each of our campuses will always be a priority of GSU. Our strategic plan pillar of Identity, Placemaking and Belonging guides our work to continually improve our campus spaces and be a catalyst for revitalization of downtown Atlanta. Students, faculty and staff are always encouraged to communicate with my office, as well as report any safety concerns to GSUPD by phone at 404-413-3333 or through the GSU Live Safe App. Working together, we make a positive difference.
